Getting there and around

Kardzhali lies on the main road between Haskovo and the Greek border at Makaza, and is served by a bus station in the city with connections to Haskovo, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and the wider region. The nearest railway connections are in Haskovo and Dimitrovgrad, from where local buses complete the trip. Within Kardzhali, city buses and taxis cover the centre and the outlying quarters; the riverside, the museum and the main square are easily walkable. For Perperikon, Tatul, the Monyak fortress and the Kardzhali Reservoir, local buses run to nearby villages but a car or taxi gives more flexibility.

When to go

Spring and early summer are the best periods to visit Kardzhali, when the Eastern Rhodopes are green and the archaeological sites at Perperikon and Tatul are open and comfortable to explore. Autumn is also mild and suitable for walking around the Arda valley and the Kardzhali Reservoir. Summer can be hot in the valley, while winter brings rain and occasional snow. The city's festivals and the museum's programme are busiest in the warmer months.
