How many nights do I need in Sofia?
Three nights is the minimum for the centre plus Boyana Church and Vitosha, and four is more comfortable. Add a fifth if you want the Rila Monastery day (240 km round trip) without rushing back. Two nights only works if you are treating Sofia as a stopover between Belgrade and Istanbul. Anything beyond five nights is better split with Plovdiv, two hours away by train.
How do I get from Sofia Airport to the city centre?
Take Metro Line 1 from Terminal 2 to Serdika — it costs €0.80 and takes about 20 minutes, running until roughly midnight. From Terminal 1 there is a free shuttle to T2 for the metro. Official OK Supertrans taxis from outside the terminal run €8-13 to Sredets; ignore anyone approaching you inside the hall. Uber does not operate in Bulgaria.
Do I need a car in Sofia?
No, not for the city itself — the metro, trams and your feet cover everything from Sredets to Boyana. A car helps only if you are combining Sofia with Rila Monastery, Koprivshtitsa or the Iskar Gorge, and even then day tours from central Sofia are often easier. Central parking sits in blue (€1/hour) and green (€0.50/hour) zones with SMS enforcement. If you do rent, ask the hotel about a garage before driving in.
Is Sofia good for families or better for couples?
It works for both, but families do better in Lozenets or Triaditsa where the streets are leafier and the Borisova Gradina park is a five-minute walk. Couples tend to prefer Oborishte for the restaurants around Shishman Street. Family rooms are common in three-stars but not standard — always confirm the cot. The Sofia Zoo, the Muzeiko children’s museum in Studentski Grad, and the Vitosha cable car from Simeonovo are the three family fixed points.
What should I book in advance in Sofia?
Boyana Church tickets — slots for eight people every 15 minutes and July-August mornings sell out. Rila Monastery day tours the day before is usually fine, but Easter weekend needs a week. Hotel-wise, book a month ahead for Orthodox Easter, the 24 May weekend, and any Vitosha snow weekend when Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo fill with skiers. Regular weekends in Sredets need only a few days' notice.
About Pancharevo
Pancharevo is a village 15 km south-east of central Sofia, set on the Pancharevo reservoir, an artificial lake in the Iskar river valley. Sofians come for weekend rowing, cycling and family lunches. There is a rowing club, working thermal baths, lakeside fish restaurants and forested hills. The village is small, with houses along the main square, a church and a few shops, while most life happens along the lakeshore road. It is quiet on weekdays and has no nightlife. Spring and autumn are best, when the baths are open and the lake path is dry. Summer weekends bring crowds, with parking full by 10:30 and restaurant queues by 13:00. Winter is quiet and cold, and the baths close in October, reopening in May.
