It works for both, but families do better in Lozenets or Triaditsa where the streets are leafier and the Borisova Gradina park is a five-minute walk. Couples tend to prefer Oborishte for the restaurants around Shishman Street. Family rooms are common in three-stars but not standard — always confirm the cot. The Sofia Zoo, the Muzeiko children’s museum in Studentski Grad, and the Vitosha cable car from Simeonovo are the three family fixed points.

Boyana Church tickets — slots for eight people every 15 minutes and July-August mornings sell out. Rila Monastery day tours the day before is usually fine, but Easter weekend needs a week. Hotel-wise, book a month ahead for Orthodox Easter, the 24 May weekend, and any Vitosha snow weekend when Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo fill with skiers. Regular weekends in Sredets need only a few days' notice.

A clean two-star or guesthouse private room in Vazrazhdane runs €30-45, a central three-star double in Sredets or Oborishte sits at €50-80, and four-stars around Vitosha Boulevard start at €100. The five-stars — Grand Hotel Sofia, Sense, InterContinental — begin around €180 and climb from there. Breakfast is usually included below four-star and charged separately (€8-13) above it. Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026, so the rate you see is the rate you pay.

The centre absolutely is — Sredets, Oborishte, Serdika and Vazrazhdane are all within a 20-minute walk of each other, and the yellow-brick streets around the Presidency are traffic-calmed. Pavements are uneven in places and winter ice is real from December to February, so pack proper shoes. Anything beyond the centre — Boyana, Bankya, Pancharevo, Dragalevtsi — needs the metro, a bus or a taxi. Vitosha Boulevard itself is fully pedestrianised.

Five: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (the gold-domed 1912 landmark), Sveta Sofia Basilica next door (6th century, the city’s namesake), the Boyana Church (UNESCO, 13th-century frescoes, €5 entry), the Rotunda of St George (4th century, hidden in a courtyard behind the Presidency), and Sveta Nedelya on the main square. If you have a day free, the Rila Monastery is 117 km south and the reason many Orthodox pilgrims come to Bulgaria. All five city sites are within a 15-minute walk of Serdika metro.
