The centre absolutely is — Sredets, Oborishte, Serdika and Vazrazhdane are all within a 20-minute walk of each other, and the yellow-brick streets around the Presidency are traffic-calmed. Pavements are uneven in places and winter ice is real from December to February, so pack proper shoes. Anything beyond the centre — Boyana, Bankya, Pancharevo, Dragalevtsi — needs the metro, a bus or a taxi. Vitosha Boulevard itself is fully pedestrianised.

If you have a day free, the Rila Monastery is 117 km south and the reason many Orthodox pilgrims come to Bulgaria. All five city sites are within a 15-minute walk of Serdika metro.
