A car helps only if you are combining Sofia with Rila Monastery, Koprivshtitsa or the Iskar Gorge, and even then day tours from central Sofia are often easier. Central parking sits in blue (€1/hour) and green (€0.50/hour) zones with SMS enforcement. If you do rent, ask the hotel about a garage before driving in.

It works for both, but families do better in Lozenets or Triaditsa where the streets are leafier and the Borisova Gradina park is a five-minute walk. Couples tend to prefer Oborishte for the restaurants around Shishman Street. Family rooms are common in three-stars but not standard — always confirm the cot. The Sofia Zoo, the Muzeiko children’s museum in Studentski Grad, and the Vitosha cable car from Simeonovo are the three family fixed points.
