Where is Villa Pontica located?
Villa Pontica is in Simeonovo, Sofia-Grad (412 Simeonovsko Shosse Blvd., Sofia, Bulgaria), close to Hagia Sophia Church.
How much does Villa Pontica cost per night?
Prices are set live by the hotel — check the booking page for a real rate for your dates.
Is Sofia a walkable city?
The centre absolutely is — Sredets, Oborishte, Serdika and Vazrazhdane are all within a 20-minute walk of each other, and the yellow-brick streets around the Presidency are traffic-calmed. Pavements are uneven in places and winter ice is real from December to February, so pack proper shoes. Anything beyond the centre — Boyana, Bankya, Pancharevo, Dragalevtsi — needs the metro, a bus or a taxi. Vitosha Boulevard itself is fully pedestrianised.
Which churches and religious sites should I actually see in Sofia?
Five: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (the gold-domed 1912 landmark), Sveta Sofia Basilica next door (6th century, the city’s namesake), the Boyana Church (UNESCO, 13th-century frescoes, €5 entry), the Rotunda of St George (4th century, hidden in a courtyard behind the Presidency), and Sveta Nedelya on the main square. If you have a day free, the Rila Monastery is 117 km south and the reason many Orthodox pilgrims come to Bulgaria. All five city sites are within a 15-minute walk of Serdika metro.
What is the best area to stay in Sofia for first-time visitors?
Sredets is the answer for a first visit — it puts you within a 10-minute walk of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sveta Nedelya, the Serdica ruins and the yellow-brick government quarter. Oborishte just to the north is quieter but equally central. Both sit above Serdika metro, so the airport is 20 minutes away on Line 1. Expect three-star doubles at €50-80.
Which is the cheapest month to visit Sofia?
The first two weeks of January are the cheapest, once New Year is over and before the Vitosha ski weekends peak. Three-star doubles in Vazrazhdane or Serdika drop to €35-40, and even four-stars off Vitosha Boulevard fall under €75. November is a close second. Avoid Orthodox Easter and 24 May, when rates jump by a third.
How many nights do I need in Sofia?
Three nights is the minimum for the centre plus Boyana Church and Vitosha, and four is more comfortable. Add a fifth if you want the Rila Monastery day (240 km round trip) without rushing back. Two nights only works if you are treating Sofia as a stopover between Belgrade and Istanbul. Anything beyond five nights is better split with Plovdiv, two hours away by train.

About Simeonovo
Simeonovo is a quiet, forested foothill village at the eastern foot of Mount Vitosha, about 20 minutes from central Sofia and bordering Dragalevtsi to the west. Its main draw is the Simeonovo cable car, a cabin gondola more reliable than the Dragalevtsi chairlift and the usual route up the mountain for hikers and skiers. The village mixes older houses with 1990s villas, and a handful of restaurants sit near the cable car base. Simeonovo Boulevard runs roughly parallel to the lower slopes. The lower village around the church and Ravnishte stays calm even on busy ski days, while queues and parking concentrate near the base. Weekday mornings outside ski season are close to empty. Steep approach roads make a car or taxi easier than the bus with luggage.
