Staying in Sredets

Sredets is the part of Sofia that visitors picture when they say central. The Council of Ministers sits on Dondukov, the Constitutional Court behind the Presidency, and embassies keep most blocks well lit and watched. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral anchors it, with coach parties queuing from 10am to 4pm and a quieter square outside those hours.

These hotels stand across that centre and just beyond it: Itzar Osvoboditel Blvd., Dondukov Blvd., Han Asparuh St., Slavianska Str., Paris Str., Budapeshta Str. and Sveti Naum Blvd. The mix suits couples who want an evening on Vitosha, families who need cots and family rooms, and business guests drawn by business centres and 24-hour desks. Two nights lets you see the cathedral at opening and again at dusk.

Where to stay in Sredets

Dondukov Blvd.

The government quarter runs along here, with the Council of Ministers on Dondukov and armed guards outside most ministries. Arte and Presidency House Self Check in Apartments both front the boulevard, putting the Presidency courtyard, ploshtad Sveta Nedelya and the cathedral within the Presidency to Nevsky loop.

Our picks here: Arte

Itzar Osvoboditel Blvd.

Tsar Osvoboditel is the walking spine of the centre: east from the Presidency past the Russian Church of St Nikolas to the National Assembly and Alexander Nevsky. Grand Hotel Bulgaria fronts it, so the Ivan Vazov Theatre, the City Garden and the cathedral are all on the same flat, paved route.

Our picks here: Grand Hotel Bulgaria

Han Asparuh St.

Diter Family Hotel sits on Han Asparuh St., inside the government quarter and close to the ministries and the National Assembly. You are on the same level, paved ground as the loop between the Presidency and the cathedral, and the metro keeps running until midnight.

Our picks here: Diter Family Hotel

Paris Str.

L'Opera Guest House stands on Paris Str. The pedestrianised stretch of Vitosha, where the bars and restaurants are, is a straight shot down Rakovski and Solunska from Alexander Nevsky, so an evening there is an easy walk rather than a taxi ride.

Our picks here: L'Opera Guest House

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Sredets is made for walking. The classic route runs from the Presidency courtyard at ploshtad Sveta Nedelya east down Tsar Osvoboditel past the Russian Church of St Nikolas, left at the National Assembly to Alexander Nevsky, behind the cathedral to the little St Sofia Basilica, then back via Moskovska past the Ivan Vazov Theatre and the City Garden. Allow about 45 minutes at an easy pace on flat, fully paved ground. The metro runs until midnight, and the pedestrianised section of Vitosha is 8 to 12 minutes on foot from Alexander Nevsky.

When to go

Alexander Nevsky draws coach parties from 10am to 4pm, queuing for photos on the steps, so outside those hours the square is far calmer. Two nights let you catch the cathedral both at opening and at dusk, when the light and the crowds are completely different. One full day covers the essentials on foot; most visitors base themselves here for two or three nights and day-trip to Boyana Church or Vitosha Mountain from the same hotel.
