Central Sredets is a walking district. The Presidency to Nevsky loop starts at the Presidency courtyard at ploshtad Sveta Nedelya, goes east down Tsar Osvoboditel past the Russian Church of St Nikolas, turns left at the National Assembly for Alexander Nevsky, loops behind the cathedral to the little St Sofia Basilica, and returns via Moskovska past the Ivan Vazov Theatre and the City Garden — about 45 minutes at an easy pace on flat, fully paved ground. The metro runs until midnight, and this is one of the safest parts of the city, well lit with embassy security patrols on most blocks. The only nuisance is aggressive taxi touts around ploshtad Nezavisimost after 23:00; walk two blocks before hailing.

Alexander Nevsky draws coach parties from 10am to 4pm, queuing for photos on the steps, so the square feels more like an airport gate than a cathedral forecourt in those hours. Arrive before 10am or after 4pm and it is a different place. Sofia is a year-round city, and the walking loop here is flat and fully paved in every season.
