About Blagoevgrad

The surrounding landscape is a major part of the city's appeal. Bachinovo Park lies just south of the centre, along the Bistritsa, and the uplands towards the Rila and Pirin mountains are within easy reach. Blagoevgrad serves as a practical base for walking, spa and outdoor trips in the region, while the city itself offers theatres, museums, sports facilities and a busy calendar of student and cultural events. It is also close to the Struma motorway corridor, which links the area with the Aegean coast and the interior of the country.

Where to stay in Blagoevgrad

City centre. The area around Georgi Izmirliev Square and the main pedestrian streets puts you within walking distance of shops, cafés and administrative buildings, and is convenient for short city stays.

Bachinovo. This area south of the centre, around Bachinovo Park along the Bistritsa River, is quieter and greener, with several larger hotels and easy access to walking paths.

Varosha and the western districts. The older residential quarters on the western side of the city mix housing with small local businesses and give a more everyday view of Blagoevgrad, still within reach of the centre.

Around the university campuses. The streets near the main university buildings have a student-oriented character, with budget accommodation, cheap eateries and frequent bus connections to the rest of the city.

Getting there and around

Blagoevgrad has no commercial airport of its own; most visitors arrive by road or rail. Intercity buses connect the city with other Bulgarian towns and with destinations further afield, and the bus station is on the edge of the centre. Trains on the regional line serve a station south of the city centre. By car, the Struma motorway corridor passes nearby. Within Blagoevgrad, the central area is small enough to explore on foot, while local buses and taxis cover the outer districts and Bachinovo Park.

When to go

Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for walking and sightseeing, with milder temperatures and fewer extremes than midsummer. Summer can be hot in the valley but is suitable for trips into the nearby mountains, while winter brings colder weather and occasional snow. The city's university calendar means it is busiest during term time; late spring and early autumn often feel quieter.
