Getting there and around

Plovdiv is served by Plovdiv Airport, which handles a limited number of seasonal and charter flights; many travellers arrive via connecting flights or by land from other Bulgarian cities. The city lies on a major railway line and has regular train and bus connections from across the country, with the main railway station and bus station located close to the centre. By road, Plovdiv is reached via the Trakia motorway. Within the city, the flat central area is easy to explore on foot, especially the main pedestrian street, Kapana and the Old Town. Public transport includes buses, trolleybuses and trams, and taxis are widely available. Parking in the centre can be limited, so many hotels offer or arrange parking.

When to go

Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing, with mild temperatures and the city's parks and outdoor sites in good condition. Summer can be hot, but it is also when many festivals, open-air concerts and events take place. Winter is colder, with occasional snow, though the Christmas markets and indoor cultural programme continue. Rain is possible throughout the year, with slightly wetter conditions in late spring and early summer.
