Veliko Turnovo is served by bus and train from major Bulgarian cities. The bus station and railway station are in the southern part of the city, within walking distance of the centre. Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport is the nearest airport, about 10 kilometres away, with limited seasonal flights; most international visitors arrive via larger airports and continue by road. Within the city, walking is the best way to explore the historic centre, as many streets are steep and cobbled. Local buses and taxis connect the centre with Arbanassi and other districts, but the main sights are clustered together.
When to go
The best time to visit Veliko Turnovo is from May to June and September to October, when the weather is mild and ideal for exploring the historic sites. Summer months, especially July and August, can be hot, but the evenings bring a pleasant atmosphere and outdoor events. Winter is cold, with occasional snow, but the city is less crowded and the light and sound show at Tsarevets continues on selected evenings. Spring and autumn also offer colourful landscapes along the Yantra River.
