Buses 66, 64, 122 and the seasonal 63 reach every main trailhead and village from the metro. The Dragalevtsi chairlift to Aleko Ridge has been intermittent for years, so confirm on the day; if it is closed, hike up or take bus 64 to a higher trailhead. The Simeonovo chairlift runs weekends year-round and some weekdays in high season. A car saves time and matters more in winter, when bus frequency drops and the Aleko road can need chains, but hikers and day-trippers manage fine on public transport.
When to go
Winter suits skiers, with the season running December to March and snow depending on the year; Aleko has one easy run suitable for beginners, but Vitosha is not a beginner resort. Summer brings families and hikers, with wild strawberries lining the lower trails in June and the summit often 15 degrees cooler than Sofia, so bring a warm layer even in July. By October the beech woods below Aleko turn orange and the crowds thin to almost nobody.
